The final week of the year was off to a cool start in the UAE as winds picked up.
Forecasters said cooler conditions would prevail throughout the week and into the new year because of to some north-easterly gusty winds.
“We can say it feels relatively cold in UAE terms,” said Dr Ahmad Habib, of the National Centre of Meteorology.
“The active winds often make the weather feel cooler than the temperature recorded; even if it is 22°C, with active wind it will feel about four degrees lower.”
He said Sunday’s weather was a good example of how wind at speeds of up to 45kph can keep conditions pleasant.
The fall in temperature began on Saturday night and high winds contributed to a choppier sea on Sunday, with waves reaching as high as 2.5 metres, he said.
Despite Sunday’s weather warnings to beachgoers, the rest of the week would remain calm and cool, Dr Habib said.
“By [Monday] we believe sea activities can resume, and we expect more beachgoers as well.”
This is because the wind direction will change, he said.
“Starting today the wind will be north-easterly. It will feel as cold as it feels now, especially at night.”
Temperatures will range between 20°C to 24°C in coastal areas during the day, and between 12°C to 17°C at night.
“The temperature will be lower at night and early morning in internal areas; we are expecting it to range between 10°C and 14°C,” said Dr Habib.
The lowest temperature recorded on Sunday was 4°C on Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak.
No rain is forecast this week but people planning to go camping at the weekend should pack warm overnight clothes.
Those heading to the seaside can expect sunny skies and pleasant temperatures.
Increased humidity overnight may cause mist to form on Tuesday and Wednesday, so early-morning drivers should take extra care.

Moral education needed in a 'rapidly changing world'
Moral education lessons for young people is needed in a rapidly changing world, the head of the programme said.
Alanood Al Kaabi, head of programmes at the Education Affairs Office of the Crown Price Court - Abu Dhabi, said: "The Crown Price Court is fully behind this initiative and have already seen the curriculum succeed in empowering young people and providing them with the necessary tools to succeed in building the future of the nation at all levels.
"Moral education touches on every aspect and subject that children engage in.
"It is not just limited to science or maths but it is involved in all subjects and it is helping children to adapt to integral moral practises.
"The moral education programme has been designed to develop children holistically in a world being rapidly transformed by technology and globalisation."
New process leads to panic among jobseekers
As a UAE-based travel agent who processes tourist visas from the Philippines, Jennifer Pacia Gado is fielding a lot of calls from concerned travellers just now. And they are all asking the same question.
“My clients are mostly Filipinos, and they [all want to know] about good conduct certificates,” says the 34-year-old Filipina, who has lived in the UAE for five years.
Ms Gado contacted the Philippines Embassy to get more information on the certificate so she can share it with her clients. She says many are worried about the process and associated costs – which could be as high as Dh500 to obtain and attest a good conduct certificate from the Philippines for jobseekers already living in the UAE.
“They are worried about this because when they arrive here without the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] clearance, it is a hassle because it takes time,” she says.
“They need to go first to the embassy to apply for the application of the NBI clearance. After that they have go to the police station [in the UAE] for the fingerprints. And then they will apply for the special power of attorney so that someone can finish the process in the Philippines. So it is a long process and more expensive if you are doing it from here.”
