Abu Dhabi Education Council has begun preparations for the second round of the Abu Dhabi Reads campaign
It will start in April and is aimed at encouraging a communal culture of reading.
Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, the council’s director general, said there was much work to be done, starting with schoolchildren.
“The road to innovation and excellence begins with the student’s keenness to read,” he said.
The campaign has programmes and activities to foster reading and writing skills among students through designating specific time for these activities.
The council said it wanted to help students do well in national and international tests.
It said its curricula were reliant on making learning resources easily accessible to students, and encouraging parents to teach their children to read at home.
The first round of the campaign was deemed a success, as it sought to improve students’ reading ability progressively.
The objectives of the campaign vary each year but its core priorities are helping students to learn, to inspire them intellectually and to foster their enjoyment of reading.
The chief objective, however, was to raise awareness about the importance of reading among students and the general community.
