200 students expected to sign up for new print course

ABU DHABI // The Higher Colleges of Technology plans to offer the country's first course in printing and publishing later this year with the aim of supplying a new generation of talent for the industry. More than 200 students are expected to be enrolled in the programme in its first year. Institutions including the Abu Dhabi Men's and Women's Colleges will run the course and offer certificates in work readiness and diplomas in printing and packaging as well as printing management and maintenance.

"Our students and our citizens must be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for living and working in a changing world," said Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. "We are committed to helping them succeed in fulfilling their educational, career and other life goals." Sheikh Nahyan was speaking at the inauguration of Counselling Arabia 2009, a conference focusing on the developments in the field of counselling, at Abu Dhabi Women's College. He also signed an agreement with Mohammed Khalaf al Mazrouei, the chairman of Abu Dhabi Media Company, which publishes The National, and with United Printing and Publishing to develop and offer courses in the field.

Mr al Mazrouei said it was important for men and women in the UAE to have access to the same levels of education. "We pride ourselves because we make no distinctions and provide opportunities for both in all fields," he said. "Every individual in this country has to be prepared, in order to reach the highest of their potential. "This is the only [such] programme in the country and it is unique. We are doing this to help educate students to be able to take up future positions. There is a great need in the printing industry but not enough students."

Printing, Mr al Mazrouei said, was one of the top 10 industries in the world. "These courses will offer big opportunities because there are 1,200 printing companies here. The big chance is here, for locals to have training and education and jobs." United Printing and Packaging publishes books, magazines, catalogues and directories, as well as customised financial reports. sbhattacharya@thenational.ae
