ABU DHABI // Eighteen teams of schoolchildren have been selected to represent the UAE at an international robot-making competition.

The teams beat competitors from 300 other private and public school teams at national heats in Abu Dhabi to win a place at the World Robot Olympiad International finals in Doha next month.

First, second and third-place winners in the elementary schools regular category included the Sharjah Children Centre, Kalba Children’s Centre in Fujairah and Rashid bin Humaid Modern School in Ajman.

Junior high schools that placed in the top positions in the regular category were Rashid bin Humaid Modern School in Ajman, Fun Robotics Centre in Dubai and Al Jumana School in Khor Fakkan.

The American Community School of Abu Dhabi came in first place for the senior high school regular category, the only school to place in that division of the contest.

Students from the Rashid bin Humaid Modern School in Ajman earned first place in the football category, while Al Tamayoz School in Al Ain won second place and Al Nokhba School in the Western Region won third.

In the open category, the top three winners were the Fun Robotics Centre, Millennium School in Dubai and Al Raheed School in Fujairah. Our Own High School in Dubai placed fourth, and the Ministry of Education team earned fifth.

Dr Najla Al Naqbi, e-learning manager at Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), said: “We are very proud of our students who won the competition and are confident that they are more than equipped and ready to compete in the international challenge.

“All our students were dedicated to winning, yet had fun mantling and experimenting with their robots, which is exactly what we aim to achieve at Adec, to encourage students to engage in innovative and creative activities that require Stem-related knowledge in order to achieve.”
