DUBAI // Two Dubai taxi drivers have appeared in court charged with illegally possessing more than 35,000 sedative pills.

One of the Pakistani defendants confessed while his compatriot denied the charges at the Dubai Criminal Court.

The men were arrested on November 17 last year with 35,200 prazolam tablets, also known as xanax, a sedative.

An Emirati policeman said officers received a tip off that one of the men was in possession of the pills and was trying to smuggle them out of the country.

“An undercover policeman posed as a buyer and agreed to meet near the Vegetable and Fruit market in Al Aweer,” said the policeman.

Both men were arrested after they handed the drugs to the officer.

The next hearing will be on May 24.
