DUBAI // A policeman who was caught with drugs, then begged his arresting colleague to throw away the banned substances and cover for him, was jailed for four years by Dubai Criminal Court.

Emirati M M, 49, was arrested in April with 0.23 grams of hashish and nearly 30 tramadol tablets.

He was charged with possessing and consuming drugs, both of which he confessed to on Monday.

Prosecutors said that the police anti-narcotics department received a tip-off about the officer and an arrest warrant against him was issued on April 21.

He was arrested the following day at work, records show, but they do not state where he was stationed. Some tablets were found on him at work and more in his car.

“When the officer found the drugs, M M asked him for help and told him to throw away the drugs so he doesn’t get in big trouble,” testified K M, 24, a police lieutenant.

The defendant was taken to Bur Dubai police station, where urine samples found traces of drugs. He confessed to taking drugs four days before his arrest.
