DUBAI // Two men who were driving while drunk and high on hashish were each sentenced to four years in prison at Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday.

On March 5, Azerbaijanis J A, 32, and Q S, 31, were waiting at traffic lights but did not drive off when the lights turned to green. A police patrol spotted the incident after their car caused a traffic jam.

Policeman A M testified: “Around 8.30pm on the day of the incident, we noticed a huge traffic jam caused by the defendants’ car. I parked while my partner went to see what was the problem and he saw that the driver, Q S, was trying to turn the car on while the gear was on Drive, so my partner helped him start the car.”

He added that the driver then started driving against traffic.

“My partner and I went to the car again and saw J A in a weird state – he was not communicating with us at all,” said A M.

“I thought he was sick, so I called for an ambulance, then I asked Q S for his driving licence but he failed to produce it. I placed him in the police car.

“When the ambulance came, the staff told us they suspected J A was high on drugs, so I called for back-up who came and took both men to the police station.”

At the Criminal Court last month, both men, who will be deported after their sentence, confessed to charges of alcohol and drug consumption.
