DUBAI // A Syrian man charged with stealing a car and attempting to ship it outside the country using forged documents was acquitted this morning, while an accomplice was sentenced to three years.

The man’s compatriot, AN, 47, was convicted of stealing a Toyota Camry in July 2010, forging a shipping letter from the Roads and Transport Authority, and using the forged letter to ship the car out of the country. He will be deported after serving his prison term.

AM, 26, who was acquitted, and AN denied the charges when they appeared before the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance last month.

AM had been accused of taking the car from a third defendant, identified in records as MY, who had leased it from Dubai Car Rental since May 29 and failed to pay Dh6,440 in rental fees.

The two men then tried to ship the car outside the UAE, prosecutors say.
