Six men have been accused of stealing Dh4 million from two employees of a Dubai general trading company.

The employees withdrew the money from their company’s bank account on October 6 last year.

The six Ethiopian men, aged between 27 and 46, watched the two employees leave the bank in Al Muraqqabat area, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

“We had just cashed a Dh4m cheque and were heading back to the company when they attacked us,” said one of the employees.

The pair was assaulted and threatened with a knife.

“As I tried to defend myself and the bag which contained the money, one of them punched me and snatched the bag out of my hand,” said the Indian employee.

The attackers ran away with the money while the two men rushed to Al Muraqqabat police station to report the theft.

Police officers identified the rental car used in the theft and tracked down the group.

The men were arrested and they admitted to stealing the cash.

Officers recovered Dh521,900 from an abandoned house in Ajman.

“The remaining sum was handed over to an Ethiopian couple who smuggled it out of the UAE,” said a police officer.

The couple was also arrested and charged for abetting the crime.

The six men denied the charge in court on Thursday morning.

The next hearing is on February 4.
