A salesman was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday after the Dubai Criminal Court found him guilty of raping a woman at knifepoint.
The accused, 23, attacked his 39-year-old victim on the doorstep of her flat in Naif as she was returning from dropping her son off for his school bus.
He put a knife to her throat and dragged her to the bedroom, where he raped her. The attacker stole Dh200 from her purse and left the flat.
"He asked me to check if no one was outside the apartment so he could leave," the woman said.
As soon as her husband returned home from work, she told him what had happened and he called the police.
Two days after the attack on February 16 last year, police officers tracked down and arrested the attacker. He admitted to raping the woman and stealing from her.
"We found Dh135 with him, which he said remained from the amount he stole from his victim," a policeman said.
He was charged with rape and theft on July 26, 2020.
He was also charged with consuming alcohol without a licence. His case was heard in a closed courtroom.

The story of Edge
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, established Edge in 2019.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
