A cook stole three luxury watches and a designer bag worth Dh650,000 from an Emirati footballer he worked for, a court heard.

The professional player, 29, alerted police after discovering the valuables were missing from his home.

He singled out his Bangaldeshi employee as the prime suspect as he had access to his bedroom.

“He was the only one allowed into my bedroom because he does the ironing and folding of clothes,” said the player.

“And the items were kept in my bedroom in a small safe.”

The incident happened on May 19 this year.

Judges at Dubai Criminal Court were told an RM hand watch worth Dh420,000, AP and Cartier timepieces which were together valued at Dh220,000 and a Dh10,000 Louboutin bag had been taken.

Police found the cook's fingerprint on the bottom of the wardrobe where the safe was kept.

“He denied at first and said in his work nature as a cook, he was not allowed into the bedroom,” said an Emirati policeman.

“But when he was confronted with the fingerprint report findings, he admitted and said he took the whole safe and when he failed to open it, he threw it away,”

It was not disclosed in court if the safe was found.

The employee denied the theft charge when in court.
A verdict is expected to be passed on August 24.

Recipe

Garlicky shrimp in olive oil
Gambas Al Ajillo

Preparation time: 5 to 10 minutes

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients

180ml extra virgin olive oil; 4 to 5 large cloves of garlic, minced or pureed (or 3 to 4 garlic scapes, roughly chopped); 1 or 2 small hot red chillies, dried (or ¼ teaspoon dried red chilli flakes); 400g raw prawns, deveined, heads removed and tails left intact; a generous splash of sweet chilli vinegar; sea salt flakes for seasoning; a small handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Method

Heat the oil in a terracotta dish or frying pan. Once the oil is sizzling hot, add the garlic and chilli, stirring continuously for about 10 seconds until golden and aromatic.

Add a splash of sweet chilli vinegar and as it vigorously simmers, releasing perfumed aromas, add the prawns and cook, stirring a few times.

Once the prawns turn pink, after 1 or 2 minutes of cooking,  remove from the heat and season with sea salt flakes.

Once the prawns are cool enough to eat, scatter with parsley and serve with small forks or toothpicks as the perfect sharing starter. Finish off with crusty bread to soak up all that flavour-infused olive oil.
