DUBAI // Two Britons will spend five years in jail after Dubai Criminal Court convicted them of possessing and consuming marijuana.

M P, 27, was charged with having 49.77 grams of the drug to sell, and with facilitating drug consumption for his co-accused, countryman M T, 36, who was charged with aiding and abetting and consuming drugs.

“We were tipped off that M P sells drugs, so we arrested him on SZR near a restaurant, and M T was with him in the car,” testified policeman A A, 36.

The officer added that drugs were found on M P at the time of arrest and, upon searching his house, he willingly handed more drugs that were hidden in a black box.

“He told us that he bought the drugs from an African man to whom he was introduced by M T,” said the officer.

The men denied the charges against them in court in October. However, both were convicted and sentenced to five years in jail each and jointly fined Dh20,000.

Both will be deported after serving their terms.
