DUBAI // An Indian electrician impersonated a policemen in a bid to kidnap, assault and rob two men, a court was told yesterday.
The Dubai Criminal Court heard that on January 25 this year, the Bangladeshi victims, M S and M A, both 24, were cycling back to their residence at 9pm when A M M, 22, and two other unidentified men, stopped them.
“They told us they were from the criminal investigations department at the Dubai police,” said M S.
He said that seconds later, more men arrived and all of them dragged the two victims to a sandy area away from the road.
“They took us to an unlit area and used their hands and wooden bars to hit us,” said M S.
M S said the men took Dh500 in cash from him and a mobile phone and Dh10 from his friend.
“A car then pulled over near us and two Arab men asked the attackers what they were doing. They said to the men in the car that they were police officers but when they were asked for their IDs they ran away,” said M S.
Most of the men managed to escape except A M M.
He denied charges of kidnap, assault, theft and impersonating a policeman.
The next hearing is on May 15.
