Baggage rules for Metro 'same as for airlines'

DUBAI // Passengers on the Metro are allowed one suitcase-sized piece of luggage and one handluggage-sized case, transport chiefs said today. The Roads and Transport Authority clarified the size of baggage allowed on the Metro after confusion arose over the original regulations. The rules are intended for commuters going to and from the two stations at Dubai Airport, the allowed size follows Emirates Airlines' baggage policy. Those who attempt to bring excess luggage onto trains will be turned away, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said. When the Metro launched last September, false media reports stated that luggage was not allowed. Transport officials were quick to point out that luggage that could pass though the gates was allowed on the trains. The baggage size restriction was expected to deter companies from using the Metro to transport goods and large bulky parcels, taking up space on the trains that run at six-minute intervals during peak hours. Passengers can bring one larger piece of luggage and one small piece onto the system, the RTA said. Bags can be no larger than 81cm by 58cm by 30cm and maximum weight is at the discretion of Metro staff. The second piece is to be the same size as carry-on luggage, the RTA said.
