AJMAN // Police confiscated 109 bikes last week after the cyclists were caught riding without wearing high-visibility vests.

The one-week campaign aimed to minimise traffic accidents and raise traffic safety awareness, said Major Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, head of traffic police.

There were six bicycle accidents resulting in injuries, including one severe, one moderate and four minor, in the first half of the year, said Maj Al Falasi.

In the past years, fluorescent vests and helmets have been distributed to cyclists, especially those of Asian nationalities, as they are often involved in such accidents, reported Aletihad, the sister newspaper of The National.

Maj Al Falasi urged cyclists to comply with traffic regulations, to wear their helmets and reflective vests while riding, to give hand signals and to ride on the correct side of the road.
