FUJAIRAH // Dibba Municipality seized 150 hazardous toys last month because of the risks they posed to public health.

The toys, which expand in water and did not conform to safety regulations, were seized by a team of inspectors from the Dibba Municipality Department of Environment and General Services.

The inspection campaign targeted six supermarkets in rural areas of Dibba, said Abdulrahman Al Afkham, manager of the department.

The two types of toys seized were Lizard Egg and Crystal Ball, which are tiny and colourful but expand when exposed to water and are considered hazardous, he said.

Both were made in China.

“Children may try to eat it and if so, it will expand in their bodies and affect their health. The toys didn’t have any instructional leaflet or age restrictions. Such items enter the market without any permission.”

Mr Al Afkham urged residents to report any incidents or toys they feel may harm children, and to keep a close eye on toys they buy.

The department runs regular inspections and awareness campaigns that target residents and shop owners.

Seham Al Hamoudi, a mother of two who lives in Dibba, said she does not allow her children to buy cheap toys. “Small, colourful toys draw all the kids’ attention,” said the 37-year-old.

“That’s why I don’t allow them to go to the supermarket by themselves. If they want a toy I prefer to buy it from a specialised toy shop to be sure it’s safe and age suitable.”
