The Yankees claimed city bragging rights in New York as they dominated the Mets in a 9-1 win to kick-off a round of inter-league fixtures.

Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones hit consecutive homers off a beleagured Johan Santana in the fourth inning to do much of the damage.

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda was imperious at the other end, hurling seven frames for one hit.

Adrian Gonzalez's 200th home run was in a losing cause as National League East leaders the Washington Nationals ran out 7-4 winners over the Boston Red Sox.

Gonzalez biffed a solo shot to centre ground to bring up his landmark in the eighth inning but by then Stephen Strasburgh had already set his side for victory, fanning 13 in six innings.

The Texas Rangers rode a Matt Harrison shutout to claim a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants, who were kept off the scoreboard for the first time this season.

CJ Wilson celebrated his 50th career win as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-2.

Wilson struck out nine and Torii Hunter did the offensive damage with a pair of two-run homers.

Josh Tomlin helped the Cleveland Indians to a 6-2 win over the St Louis Cardinals, allowing two runs on eight hits in a seven-inning toss.

Johnny Damon hit a two-run homer, his second of the season.

The Baltimore Orioles slipped to a 9-6 beating at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies. Jake Arrieta was taken for six runs in the first two innings, with Shane Victorino driving in five of them, and the Os never recovered.

Hitters dominated as the San Diego Padres went down 9-5 at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Starting pitchers Edinson Volquez and Shaun Marcum were both off-colour, conceding six hits apiece inside six innings. Volquez was made to pay a heavier price, coughing six runs before getting the hook.

Corey Hart had two runs and three hits from four at-bats.

The Houston Astros nudged ahead of the Chicago White Sox in the top of the first and stayed in front to secure an 8-3 win.

With the result already in the bag, Brian Bogusevic applied the finishing touches with a three-run homer in the ninth.

The Tampa Bay Rays made light work of the Miami Marlins, who wasted frequent scoring chances in a 5-1 defeat.

Matt Joyce showed them the way for the Rays, homering in a three-run match.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made it 10 wins from 13 as they defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-2, while Josh Willingham drove home Darin Mastroianni to secure an 8-7 win for the Minnesota Twins against the Chicago Cubs.

The Cincinnati Reds needed a 10th inning to edge the Detroit Tigers 6-5, as did the Atlanta Braves in their 4-3 defeat of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ichiro Suzuki provided the only run of the game as the Seattle Mariners edged the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a dramatic comeback to beat the Oakland Athletics 9-8 with a three-runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Tips for job-seekers
  • Do not submit your application through the Easy Apply button on LinkedIn. Employers receive between 600 and 800 replies for each job advert on the platform. If you are the right fit for a job, connect to a relevant person in the company on LinkedIn and send them a direct message.
  • Make sure you are an exact fit for the job advertised. If you are an HR manager with five years’ experience in retail and the job requires a similar candidate with five years’ experience in consumer, you should apply. But if you have no experience in HR, do not apply for the job.
