The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards were launched to “support and highlight the creative pioneering efforts of individuals, groups or sport institutions.” The winners for Year 5 of the awards were announced on Sunday.
UAE Sports Personality – Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak
Sheikha Fatima has been a pioneer of women’s sports in the country. Under her patronage, an International Conference on Women’s Sports was held in Abu Dhabi last year. She also received the International Olympic Committee’s President’s Trophy for her contribution to sports.
Arab Sports Personality – Sheikh Salman Al Khalifa
Promising transparency and accountability in the Asian Football Confederation, and vowing to root out corruption, Bahrain’s Sheikh Salman won a landslide victory in May’s election for the AFC presidency, receiving 33 of 46 votes.
International Sports Personality – Thomas Bach
A fencing gold-medal winner at the 1976 Olympic Games, the German was voted to an eight-year term as the IOC president in September.
Emerging Arab Athlete – Karar Mohammad Jawad
Winner of three gold medals at the 2012 World Youth Championships in Slovakia, Jawad, 17, became the first Iraqi to set a weightlifting world record. At the World Junior Championships this year, he won a gold, silver and a bronze.
Arab Athlete – Mutaz Essa Barshim
The Qatari, 22, holds the indoor and outdoor Asian high-jumping records. In June, he improved his own Asian outdoor mark to 2.40m at the Prefontaine Classic in the US. In August, he won a silver at the Moscow World Championships.

• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.
How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
