LONDON // Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Carlos Tevez fully deserved his Community Shield man-of-the-match prize - he is just sorry it was not capped by a goal. Despite being Manchester United's only orthodox striker at Wembley on Sunday, Tevez gave Portsmouth's beleaguered defence a torrid afternoon.
Ferguson said: "We're expecting big things from him. The great thing about Tevez is that he has a heart to play the game. He fights for every ball and is a real handful. It was a superb performance." But despite Tevez's showing, Ferguson plans to step up his efforts to bolster United's frontline - with former-Arsenal star Thierry Henry a surprise name in the frame. "There is a name every day," said Ferguson when asked whether Henry was a genuine possibility. "I can't answer the question because I don't have the right answer. But it is possible I will sign someone this week. We are trying and we are looking at one or two options.
"It has been a pressing concern since the end of last season." Meanwhile, Ben Collett, described by Ferguson as an "outstanding" player, has been awarded more than £4.3million (Dh30m) damages at the High Court in London over a tackle which ended his career. Collett, now 23, joined United aged nine and was part of the club's 2003 FA Youth Cup-winning team. But, aged 18 and in his first game in the reserves in May 2003, he had his right leg broken in two places in a tackle by Middlesbrough's Gary Smith.
Had it not been for the injury Collett would have been offered, a three-year professional contract at the club. Wembley losers Portsmouth had some good news when French centre-back Younes Kaboul, 22, agreed a four-year contract to sign from Tottenham. * PA Sport
