Mubadala World Tennis Championship organisers announced on Monday morning that Rafael Nadal would return to defend his title at the ninth edition of the tournament at the end of December.
It was also announced Tomas Berdych and David Goffin would round out the six-man field that already included Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic.
Nadal, the current world No 8, will use Abu Dhabi once more to fine-tune his game ahead of the new season and, in particular, the Australian Open. The Spaniard is also scheduled to play January’s Australian Open warm-up Brisbane International tournament for the first time.
“I really enjoy the fans, the competition and the atmosphere in the stadium in Abu Dhabi,” Nadal said in a release. “It is the best way to start my season.
“I’ve enjoyed many years playing in the UAE capital against the other top guys and I’m already looking forward to the next.
“After playing in Abu Dhabi I went on to play some great matches on the tour at the start of the year and I’ll be hoping for even better this time.”
Nadal beat Canadian world No 4 Raonic last year in the final 7-6 (7/2), 6-3. The 30-year-old has won the pre-season showcase three times, with victories in 2010 and 2011 as well.
Czech world No 10 Berdych returns for the first time since December 2012, when he competed in the fifth staging of the tournament. Belgian No 11 Goffin, 25, will make his debut in Abu Dhabi.
“It’s going to be amazing to compete in Abu Dhabi and I am really proud to be selected amongst such a world class line-up,” Goffin said in the release. “I’ve heard great things about the quality of the tournament and I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere and the fans in this part of the world.
“The competition is going to be very strong and it’s a great time of year to be playing tennis of such a high standard.”
The confirmed players give Mubadala its strongest field in three years, with all six ranking inside the top-12 in the world. If new world No 1 Murray manages to hold onto this place at the ATP World Tour Finals next week, he would be making his first appearance as a year-end No 1 in Abu Dhabi.

The struggle is on for active managers
David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.
The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.
Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.
Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.
Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.
At the start of the year, Greenlight managed $6.3 billion in assets, according to a regulatory filing. By May, the firm was down to $5.5bn.

What is a robo-adviser?
Robo-advisers use an online sign-up process to gauge an investor’s risk tolerance by feeding information such as their age, income, saving goals and investment history into an algorithm, which then assigns them an investment portfolio, ranging from more conservative to higher risk ones.
These portfolios are made up of exchange traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to indices such as US and global equities, fixed-income products like bonds, though exposure to real estate, commodity ETFs or gold is also possible.
Investing in ETFs allows robo-advisers to offer fees far lower than traditional investments, such as actively managed mutual funds bought through a bank or broker. Investors can buy ETFs directly via a brokerage, but with robo-advisers they benefit from investment portfolios matched to their risk tolerance as well as being user friendly.
Many robo-advisers charge what are called wrap fees, meaning there are no additional fees such as subscription or withdrawal fees, success fees or fees for rebalancing.
