ROME // The Italian cyclist Emanuele Sella has been handed a one-year doping ban, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) said.
The 27-year-old Sella won three stages of this year's Giro d'Italia and confessed to doping in August after testing positive for a new version of the blood-booster Erythropoietin (EPO) in an out-of-competition testing.
CONI's antidoping prosecutor said last month that a one-year ban would be more appropriate than the usual two-year suspension because Sella had confessed and collaborated with the authorities.
A tribunal, which has the final word, has now agreed with the prosecutor's request and his backdated ban will end on Aug 18 next year, according to CONI.
Sella's fellow Italian cyclist Riccardo Ricco took EPO during July's Tour de France. He was suspended for the maximum two years in October despite the prosecutor asking for a reduced 20-month sentence because he admitted his guilt.

Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.
Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:
Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.
Creamer and margarine - Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
