Kamui Kobayashi, the BMW Sauber driver, talks about his season so far It has been a difficult start to the season, with five retirements from the first six races. What did it mean to score Sauber's first point of 2010 in Turkey? "We had some very difficult situations in previous races, so it was really nice to get this point - and that both cars finished in Istanbul. It is only a single point, though, and we should not be satisfied with that. It is only a first step."
What meant more to you: making it into the top 10 in qualifying for the third time this year, or doing so in the race? "Qualifying, definitely. In a race you can always benefit from somebody else's misfortune, but qualifying is about pure performance." How did you maintain your motivation after all those retirements? "It wasn't always easy to erase bad memories, but motivation has never been a problem. I love going racing and our targets were always realistic."
What do you expect from forthcoming grands prix? "Montreal will be a new track for me. I don't even know it from the simulator, so I have to learn it during free practice. Other drivers will obviously have an advantage here, but I don't see it as a problem. In general I feel the team is on the right path."
What are the most important things you still have to learn? "I have completed only four full race distances in Formula One, so there are many - tyre management, for example. I was too hard on the tyres early on in Istanbul and towards the end I could see the canvas through the right front. You have to learn to think about these things, but it takes experience." @Email:sports@thenational.ae
