DUBAI // The UAE Cycling Federation’s talent scouts will be hoping they are kept busy this weekend as students, both boys and girls, from different Dubai schools – Government and private – take to the tracks at the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Park.

The Mini Dubai Tour will see 1,030 participants, an increase of 243 per cent on the 300 who took part in last year’s event, compete for top honours in different categories in Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum City on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The opening day of the Dubai Sports Council-organised event will see races in two categories for girls – Under 14 (9 kilometres) and U17 (18km).

The boys from affiliated clubs and schools will take to the tracks on Thursday, with the first race being for the U17 schools students (27km), followed by the U14 students (18km) and finally a 27km race for 17-year-old riders enrolled with affiliated clubs.

There will be a further three races on Saturday: a 27km race for women, followed by a 36km race for men and then a race for the employees of Mini Dubai Tour sponsors, Commercial Bank of Dubai (9km for ladies and 18km for men).

“The purpose of organising this Mini Dubai Tour is to encourage a healthy lifestyle and attract children towards this sport,” secretary general of Dubai Sports Council Saeed Hareb said.

“Of course, it will also serve as a promotion for the Dubai Tour, which is taking place from January 31 to February 4.

“The Mini Tour will also be an opportunity for the youngsters to showcase their talents and catch the eyes of the UAE Cycling Federation.

“But the real purpose is to encourage the community, Emiratis and expatriates, to take up sports and support the state’s endeavour to create a healthy community.”

Organisers have said they will provide 200 bikes along with helmets for competitors.
