SAKHIR // Felipe Massa, observed zealously by 14 world drivers' champions and chased fruitlessly by a further three, provided early evidence that he still has the character and the ability that saw him push Lewis Hamilton to within a point of the 2008 championship. The Brazilian, in his first competitive appearance since a horrific accident eight months ago, enjoyed his best ever start to a Formula One season yesterday, finishing second at the Bahrain Grand Prix and ensuring a Ferrari one-two behind teammate Fernando Alonso.
The opening race in Bahrain attracted 18 of the 20 living world champions, with four of them competing in the 49-lap race. Only Alonso - a two-time winner with Renault - was faster than Massa, however, as McLaren-Mercedes' Hamilton crossed the line third and seven-time winner Michael Schumacher came sixth, one place ahead of last year's champion, Jenson Button. Yet the modest 29-year-old insisted his second-place finish - his best result in a season-opening race - was fortunate due to fuel problems.
"After what happened last year, it is very nice to finish in this position," said Massa, who started the race from second on the grid, but was immediately overtaken by Alonso. "It was a bit strange for me, because I lost an important position on the first corner to Fernando, but then managed to follow him for the entire time. "Early in the race, I started to have a problem in terms of temperature, so I started to save fuel with 30 laps to go and then there was nothing to do. I was lucky with the problems of Sebastian Vettel [who suffered a broken exhaust while leading] and I was also lucky that Lewis was not so quick at the end. I was able to save fuel and hold the position."
Hamilton was content with third in his McLaren, but knows improvements are needed. "I think overall it was a good day. It's a strong result for myself and the team and it is certainly a lot more than we expected," he said. "We are lacking downforce compared to the Ferraris and Red Bulls." gmeenaghan@thenational.ae

Labour dispute
The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.

These are illegal outposts in the West Bank, which are at the vanguard of the settler movement. According to the UK, they are associated with people who have been involved in enabling, inciting, promoting or providing support for activities that amount to “serious abuse”.

Who is Enric Sala?
Enric Sala is an expert on marine conservation and is currently the National Geographic Society's Explorer-in-Residence. His love of the sea started with his childhood in Spain, inspired by the example of the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau. He has been a university professor of Oceanography in the US, as well as working at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Biodiversity and the Bio-Economy. He has dedicated his life to protecting life in the oceans. Enric describes himself as a flexitarian who only eats meat occasionally.
What is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, all life on earth – including in its forests and oceans – forms a “rich tapestry of interconnecting and interdependent forces”. Biodiversity on earth today is the product of four billion years of evolution and consists of many millions of distinct biological species. The term ‘biodiversity’ is relatively new, popularised since the 1980s and coinciding with an understanding of the growing threats to the natural world including habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of biodiversity itself is dangerous because it contributes to clean, consistent water flows, food security, protection from floods and storms and a stable climate. The natural world can be an ally in combating global climate change but to do so it must be protected. Nations are working to achieve this, including setting targets to be reached by 2020 for the protection of the natural state of 17 per cent of the land and 10 per cent of the oceans. However, these are well short of what is needed, according to experts, with half the land needed to be in a natural state to help avert disaster.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
