Ecclestone less optimistic about chances of Rome appearing on race calendar

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone appeared to lose some enthusiasm on Sunday about Rome's bid to host a Grand Prix having previously said the city could have a race by 2013. "In 2010 we will go to [South] Korea and the year after in India. We are trying to organise a Grand Prix also in New York. Too many places want to host a race. We will see," Ecclestone said. The Formula One supremo had said in February he was prepared to provide the necessary support to take a Grand Prix to the streets of a Rome suburb, saying the Italian capital was a unique setting and could host a race by 2013 if certain conditions were met. The Briton, like International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley, also poured cold water on Ferrari's proposal for the big teams to have three cars in the future. "No team will have a third car. It's not needed. Two cars per team are enough," he said.

The Case For Trump

By Victor Davis Hanson

How tumultuous protests grew
  • A fuel tax protest by French drivers appealed to wider anti-government sentiment
  • Unlike previous French demonstrations there was no trade union or organised movement involved
  • Demonstrators responded to online petitions and flooded squares to block traffic
  • At its height there were almost 300,000 on the streets in support
  • Named after the high visibility jackets that drivers must keep in cars
  • Clashes soon turned violent as thousands fought with police at cordons
  • An estimated two dozen people lost eyes and many others were admitted to hospital
Evacuations to France hit by controversy
  • Over 500 Gazans have been evacuated to France since November 2023
  • Evacuations were paused after a student already in France posted anti-Semitic content and was subsequently expelled to Qatar
  • The Foreign Ministry launched a review to determine how authorities failed to detect the posts before her entry
  • Artists and researchers fall under a programme called Pause that began in 2017
  • It has benefited more than 700 people from 44 countries, including Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Sudan
  • Since the start of the Gaza war, it has also included 45 Gazan beneficiaries
  • Unlike students, they are allowed to bring their families to France
