NBA: LeBron James turns up the Heat on Lakers with record performance
James scored more than 30 points for the fifth consecutive game as Miami ran out 107-97 winners, while the Lakers' city rivals capitalised on a fit squad once again to beat the New York Knicks.
LeBron James set a Miami record as the Heat claimed their fifth win in a row, with the Los Angeles Lakers falling to a 107-97 defeat.
Guard Dwyane Wade scored 16 of his 30 points in the final quarter, while James finished with 32 points and seven rebounds as he set a club record by scoring at least 30 points in five consecutive games.
"You could feel the buzz in the arena today," said James. "We were just happy that we were able to play our game, weather some of their storms that they had and come out with a win."
Chris Bosh posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who have won five straight.
Mario Chalmers had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.
Kobe Bryant paced the Lakers with 28 points and nine assists as Los Angeles lost for the second time in three games.
Earl Clark finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Dwight Howard had 15 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles.
The Lakers' city rivals the Los Angeles Clippers put their recent injury problems behind them to run out 102-88 victories at the New York Knicks.
Carmelo Anthony contributed nearly half of New York's points yet still ended up on the losing side, with his 42 points - the fifth time he has scored more than 40 points in a game this season - not enough to secure a win for the Knicks.
Having previously lost Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Blake Griffin along with sixth man Jamal Crawford to injury, Los Angeles used their impressive depth to bury the Knicks.
All Star forward Griffin acknowledged that it might have taken the Clippers, losers of eight of their previous 11 games, a little time to get reacclimated.
"Maybe a little bit. We hadn't played all together in a while so it was going to take a little bit of time," said Griffin, who scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting in Sunday's win.
The Boston Celtics extended their winning streak to seven matches and halted Denver's in the process following a sensational 118-114 triple overtime triumph over the Nuggets.
Paul Pierce led the way for the Celtics with a phenomenal performance, contributing 27 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists - his second double-triple in the last two weeks.
Denver slipped to their first defeat in 10 matches in the battle of the in-form teams, despite Ty Lawson top-scoring in the match with 29 points.

The San Antonio Spurs bounced back from defeat against the Detroit Pistons to ease past the Brooklyn Nets 111-86 - their 11th win in 12 matches - and the Sacramento Kings came from behind at the end of the third quarter to edge out the Houston Rockets 117-111.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.
