The National's Spot cover for the Monday, August 24 issue, featuring Usain Bolt as he retained his 100 metres title at the world championships in Beijing.

The Jamaican superstar had all of a one-10th second edge on rival Justin Gatlin, the season standout twice-suspended for doping.

Many framed Sunday’s headliner duel at the Athletics World Championships as a “good v evil” battle that would reverberate throughout the sport until next summer’s Rio Olympics.

Bolt himself declined to approach his victory in those terms, but did admit it was his "hardest race".

“I definitely think this was my hardest race. I’ve been through a lot this season, it’s been rough.

“After the semi-finals my coach (Glen Mills) said, ‘Listen, you are thinking about it too much, there’s too much on your mind, all you have to do is remember that you’ve been in this position way too many times, you’ve done this a million times so just go out there, relax and get it done’.

“And that’s what I did.”
