Top-class mixed-martial arts (MMA) returns to Abu Dhabi on Thursday night with the second Abu Dhabi Warriors Fighting Championship. The promotion is supported by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Osman Samiuddin gives us the who, what, where and when.

An overdue return

Abu Dhabi Warriors held their first, successful event in 2012. It has taken some time to stage a second. “The federation was transforming itself in that time to become a legal entity that covers the sport,” said Lubomir Guedjev, managing director for AD Warriors. Three more events are scheduled this year and more in 2016.

Who’s fighting?

Lots of guys, from 11 countries. A 10-fight card is planned across six weight categories. The main event is between heavyweights Brett “Da Grim” Rogers and Derrick Mehmen. Rogers is a big-name attraction for hardened fight fans, still remembered for a stunning 22-second knockout of former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski.

Late withdrawals

Though the card is seen as a solid, well-matched one, the event was hit by three late withdrawals last week. Most notable was the loss of Ole Laursen, the Filipino-Danish welterweight veteran, due to injury. Zlatko Mahic, matchmaker for the event, said a couple more Eastern European fighters have had to pull out late. “I’m still excited by the card,” Mahic said.

Remember last time

The first AD Warriors fight night was held in the capital in November 2012. That was an exciting, if chaotic event. Plans for live broadcast were shelved at the last minute and there was controversy over the result of the main event, Maro Perak beating late replacement Travis Wiuff on a split decision.

Where do I need to be?

At the IPIC Arena in Abu Dhabi. Doors will open at 6pm and the first fight is scheduled to start at 7pm. Tickets are still available, either at the venue or any Virgin Megastore branch. The event will also be televised on Abu Dhabi Sports.
