Keith Earls, the centre whose nervous debut performance encapsulated an unconvincing showing from the British & Irish Lions in their tour opener, looks set to be ruled out of contention for the game against the Golden Lions on Wednesday.
The Ireland centre, who dropped a succession of straight-forward passes and high balls early on, suffered shoulder joint trouble during the 37-25 victory over a Royal XV in Rustenburg and is unlikely to feature in Johannesburg.
Rob Howley, the Lions assistant coach, revealed Earls' mental rehabilitation from a chastening debut was already underway.
"The Lions badge and jersey can make you do funny things," said Howley. "Keith will be a much better player from the experience."
James Robson, the Lions team doctor, reported other members of the squad were suffering from "bumps and bruises".
Scrum-half Mike Blair rolled his ankle, centre Ricky Flutey missed training yesterday because of a slight strain, while skipper Paul O'Connell required anaesthetic drops to an eye abrasion.

Robson, meanwhile, gave an encouraging assessment of two players who missed the Royal XV encounter through injury.
Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris is now fit after bizarrely suffering a leg muscle strain getting off the team bus.
Meanwhile, Andy Powell, the buccaneering No 8, was back in the gym yesterday after recovering from a hand injury.
The Lions medical team remain hopeful that Leigh Halfpenny, the rookie winger, is on course to link up with the squad. Halfpenny stayed at home when the Lions flew out last Sunday in order to have intensive treatment on a thigh injury.
Robson added: "Leigh is doing very well, by all accounts."
Meanwhile, Jake White, the coach who won the 2007 World Cup with South Africa, was alarmed at the Lions performance on Saturday.
"One concern for Ian McGeechan and the coaching staff was that was almost their Test pack," said White. "The way they played was by no means good enough to take on a Springbok pack of forwards in the first Test."

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood when your kidneys fail and can no longer do the job.
It gets rid of your body's wastes, extra salt and water, and helps to control your blood pressure. The main cause of kidney failure is diabetes and hypertension.
There are two kinds of dialysis — haemodialysis and peritoneal.
In haemodialysis, blood is pumped out of your body to an artificial kidney machine that filter your blood and returns it to your body by tubes.
In peritoneal dialysis, the inside lining of your own belly acts as a natural filter. Wastes are taken out by means of a cleansing fluid which is washed in and out of your belly in cycles.
It isn’t an option for everyone but if eligible, can be done at home by the patient or caregiver. This, as opposed to home haemodialysis, is covered by insurance in the UAE.
