Lions have been consistently clowning around in Motown since 1950s

In the past two weeks, the Detroit Lions have shaken up their coaching staff and front office, hoping to recreate their success of the, uh, wait just one second ... Ah, yes, their success of the 1950s.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the 1960s happened, followed by the 70s, 80s, 90s up until the present. In the five decades of the Super Bowl era, which began in 1966, Detroit have made zero appearances in the big game.

The franchise has produced exactly one victory in the post-season in all that time, an astonishingly abysmal run. In 2008, the Lions became the only team to finish with a 0-16 record.

It is quite possible that a clown college could have been in charge of the past 50 drafts, and hired the last dozen coaches, of who none had or have winning records, and done a better job.

After making the play-offs last year, the Lions lost their first five games of this season, precipitating the firing of three assistant coaches.

This week, with a 1-7 mark and following a 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in London, Detroit sacked president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew. Owner Martha Ford, of the automotive family which have owned the team since 1963, explained, "I want to assure our fans that we intend to identify and hire the very best leadership in order to produce a consistently winning football team."

Now that is funny.
