LONDON // Amir Khan's first attempt at a world title could be postponed because the Ukrainian WBA world light-welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik has a tooth infection, Khan's promoters said.
The fight is planned for June 27 in London but Kotelnik, 31, damaged a tooth while sparring and it has become infected.
"We are just waiting to hear back from his promoters," a spokesman for Frank Warren, Khan's promoter said. "It's all a bit up in the air at the moment."
The Briton Khan, the Olympic silver medallist at lightweight in 2004, has stepped up to light-welterweight for his first world title fight. His promoters said another opponent would be sought should Kotelnik be unable to fight.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto retained his WBO welterweight title with a gruelling split decision win over Joshua Clottey of Ghana at Madison Square Garden last night.
Judges Don Trella and John McKaie scored the bout for Cotto, 116-111 and 115-112 respectively. Tom Miller scored the bout 114-113 for former IBF champion Clottey.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.
