MIAMI // Nine days after entering the NBA finals as favourites, the Oklahoma City Thunder have switched their battle cry to "wait til next year".
There was no miracle comeback for the Thunder, who went into Game 5 against Miami Heat last night 3-1 down in the series and were trampled 121-106.
The team - one of the youngest in the post-season – did not have much experience to draw on and were facing a veteran Miami side looking for redemption after losing in the 2011 finals to the Dallas Mavericks.
"It hurts. It hurts, man," said Kevin Durant, the Thunder forward. "We're all brothers on this team, and it just hurts to go out like this."
Durant, a three-time NBA leading scorer, shot 13-of-24 from the field and finished with a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds.
Guard Russell Westbrook missed 16 of 20 field goal attempts but made 11 of 13 free throws to finish with 19 points.
"They just attacked the ball," Westbrook said. "They did a good job of attacking us on our pick-and-roll and attacking the ball and making it tough."
The Thunder's problems all series long stemmed from being too slow on the fast break and a failure to protect the paint. Last night, you could add an inability to defend against the three-point shot as Miami drained 14 baskets from beyond the arc. Mike Miller went seven-of-eight by himself.
"Their defence is really good," Durant said. "I didn't want to admit it during the series, but now that it's over, those guys are really good. Last team standing."
The Thunder's three previous losses were by a total of just 16 points – four, six and six. But last night's game was a blow-out, with Miami leading by 27 points at one stage in the fourth quarter.
"They had everything going," said Scott Brooks, the Thunder coach, of Miami. "Their lay-up game, drive game. They just took it to us tonight. It is unfortunate we couldn't handle all the things they were throwing at us. They beat us fair and square."
James Harden, the Thunder guard, was already looking to next season.
"We definitely showed signs of improvement. We are not too far away. It will be hard work this summer and hopefully we will get back here," he said.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
