  • There were high hopes for Henrikh Mkhitaryan when he arrived from Dortmund in the summer of 2016 for a fee in the region of £30m. It was a rocky start under Mourinho who subbed him at half time in the Manchester derby in September 2016 and he didn't appear in the Premier League for another two months. He was criticised again last November when the manager said his form was "decreasing step by step" before he was then sold to Arsenal. Could have been great but suffered in Mourinho's rigid system which makes you wonder why he signed him in the first place. Transfer rating: 5/10. EPA

Hull City’s Andrea Ranocchia kept Liverpool at bay while Tom Huddlestone’s passing played them off the park.

Goalkeeper: Darren Randolph (West Ham United)

Southampton had more shots on target at St Mary’s but with Randolph in defiant mood, West Ham were able to win 3-1.

Right-back: Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur)

Surged forward to great effect in Tottenham’s powerful display against Middlesbrough as their dominance eventually yielded a win.

Centre-back: Lamine Kone (Sunderland)

Besides defending reliably, he set Sunderland on the way to a surprise, and surprisingly big, win at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.

Centre-back: Andrea Ranocchia (Hull City)

Made an auspicious full debut, stopping Liverpool, the Premier League’s top scorers, from finding the net and getting an assist.

Left-back: Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)

A forceful header sent Chelsea on their way to victory against Arsenal and showed the Spaniard’s knack of chipping in with important goals.

Right midfield: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)

The star of the show in United’s 3-0 win at Leicester City, sprinting away to score the first goal and setting up the third.

Centre midfield: Didier Ndong (Sunderland)

A fine long-range strike was one of many highlights of Sunderland’s 4-0 win over relegation rivals Crystal Palace.

Centre midfield: Tom Huddlestone (Hull City)

Formed a fine central-midfield partnership with Alfred N’Diaye and provided the classiest passing against Liverpool.

Left midfield: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Scored one of the goals of the season in one of the biggest games, holding off four Arsenal players on a 40-yard solo run.

Striker: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

Became the top scorer in the division with a four-goal salvo against Bournemouth. On such days, the Belgian can look unstoppable.

Striker: Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City)

The Brazilian’s spectacular start to life in England continued with a double, including an injury-time decider, against Swansea City.
