La Liga 2020/21 season set for September 12 start if current campaign is completed as planned

La Liga president Javier Tebas said on Friday that the 2020/21 season will begin on September 12, if current plans to complete this season go ahead as scheduled.

After a three-month lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Spanish league season is set to resume on June 11 after football authorities received government approval last weekend. The season is then expected to be completed on July 19.

All matches will be played without spectators although fixtures are yet to be officially confirmed.

"The important thing will be when the season finishes although we'll only be able to congratulate ourselves when we start the following season," Tebas said on Friday in an online forum organised by Spanish newspaper Marca.

"God willing that day will be September 12 and hopefully we'll be able to say we have overcome this most difficult period but at least we will be better prepared."

Tebas has led the campaign to get the season back on track since it was postponed on March 12, warning that clubs could lose up to €1 billion (Dh4.1bn) collectively if the remaining 11 rounds of matches could not be completed.

La Liga clubs have been back in training for the past few weeks, limited at first to individual sessions before moving to group training since the start of this week.

Defending champions Barcelona lead the standings, with arch rivals Real Madrid two points behind in second.
