Aaron Connolly - 7. Missed a golden chance in the first 10 minutes but the Irishman’s movement worried the defence all afternoon. Unhappy to be replaced by Lallana and rightly so. Was Brighton’s best attacker. EPA

Neal Maupay - 3. A bad day for the Frenchman. He wasted a huge opportunity by missing a penalty and then limped off and was replaced by Leandro Trossard in the 26th minute. AFP

Danny Welbeck - 6. Earned the stoppage-time penalty for the equaliser and had a happy end to what was looking like a fruitless afternoon. Getty

Adam Lallana - 3. Replaced the lively Connolly in the 63rd minute and lasted just eight minutes. Continues to be unlucky with injuries. AFP Alireza Jahanbakhsh - 4. Came on for Lallana with 19 minutes remaining. Had one opportunity to score with his head but completely missed the ball in the six-yard.

LIVERPOOL RATINGS: Alisson Becker - 6. The Brazilian’s speed in coming out of his box and cutting out problems allows the defence to play a high line. Sharp and aware. Reuters

Neco Williams - 3. Made a rash challenge to give away the first-half penalty as his inexperience showed. Replaced by Henderson at the break. Getty

Nathaniel Phillips - 6. Dominant in the air. A strong and powerful defender who is much less assured on the ground. EPA

Fabinho - 6. Played a brilliant ball to set Salah free early on that showed how much he is missed in midfield. The Brazilian is able to fill in at centre half because he reads the game so well. AP

Andrew Robertson - 4. The Scot will feel he was unfortunate to concede the late penalty on a day when he was far from his best. EPA

Georginio Wijnaldum - 6. More influential in the second half when Henderson arrived to anchor the midfield. Always one of the lynchpins of the team. PA

Takumi Minamino - 4. Playing in a midfield position that does not suit him and the Japanese needed to get forward more to support the attack. AP

James Milner - 6. The 34-year-old was playing his third game in a week and put in his usual shift. Moved to right back for the second period before getting injured and replaced by Jones. Getty

Mohamed Salah - 7. Unfortunate to have a goal ruled out for offside, the Egyptian was a threat throughout. Looked understandably frustrated to be replaced by Mane in the 64th minute. EPA

Curtis Jones - 4. The 19-year-old came on for Milner with 16 minutes left and had to slot in at right back. Relieved that Brighton did not take advantage of his presence in an unfamiliar role. Getty

VAR was in the spotlight once again as Pascal Gross' controversial late penalty secured a dramatic 1-1 draw for Brighton against Liverpool at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead through Diogo Jota's second-half strike after Brighton's Neal Maupay had missed a penalty in the first-half.

But Liverpool were shocked in stoppage-time when Andrew Robertson's challenge on Danny Welbeck was declared a penalty after Stuart Attwell overturned his original decision.

Gross converted from the spot, leaving Klopp disappointed following a tough week that also had a shock Champions League defeat to Atalanta.
