October 21, 1998 - Champions League Group D. Bayern Munich 1 (Effenburg 45') Barcelona 0: This group stage saw Bayern do the double over Louis van Gaal's Barca and help stop the Catalans from reaching the knockout stages. November 4, 1998 - Champions League Group D. Barcelona 1 (Giovanni pen 29') Bayern Munich 2 (Zickler 48', Salihamidzic 87'): Ottmar Hitzfeld's side were victorious for the second time in two weeks in front of 100,000 fans at the Camp Nou. Brazilian attacker Giovanni put Barca into a first-half lead from the spot. But German striker Alexander Zickler pulled Bayern level straight after the break before Bosnian wideman Hasan Salihamidzic grabbed a late winner. Bayern would go on to reach the final where they conceded two injury-time goals and lost against Manchester United, who had finished second behind the Germans in the group stage. Getty

April 8, 2008 - Champions League quarter-final, first leg. Barcelona 4 (Messi 9' & 38', Eto'o 13', Henry 43') Bayern Munich 0: A 21-year-old Lionel Messi scored twice as Barca blew away their opponents with a blistering first-half performance. Jurgen Klinsmann's side were no match for the Spaniards, who also saw Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry find the target at Camp Nou. April 14, 2008 - Champions League quarter-final, second leg. Bayern Munich 1 (Ribery 47') Barcelona 1 (Keita 73'): Barca sailed into a last-four clash with Chelsea after clinching a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory. Bayern at least clawed back some pride as French international Franck Ribery put the hosts in front just after the break but were denied victory by Seydou Keita's first-time finish. April 23, 2013 - Champions League semi-final, first leg. Bayern Munich 4 (Muller 25' & 82, Gomez 49' Robben 73') Barcelona 0. Sweet revenge for Bayern after their thrashing by the same scoreline five years earlier. This was Barca's worst defeat in Europe since Dynamo Kiev beat them by the same scoreline in 1997, as manager Tito Vilanova's gamble to play a clearly unfit Lionel Messi failed to pay-off. Germany midfielder Thomas Muller scored twice, with Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben also on target. Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes said: "It was not a really big surprise to me ... May 1, 2013 - Champions League semi-final, second leg. Barcelona 0 Bayern Munich 3 (Robben 48', Pique og 72', Muller 76'): Another stunning performance from the Bavarians saw them seal a record 7-0 Champions League semi-final aggregate win. Robben fired into the top corner to open the scoring just after half-time before defender Gerard Pique turned into his own net in front of a stunned Camp Nou. Muller's goal completed the rout and Bayern would go on to beat Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final - the last time they won the competition. After the semi-final humiliation, Pique said: "When another side is so superior to you, there isn't any option except to congratulate them." Getty

May 6, 2015 - Champions League semi-final, first leg. Barcelona 3 (Messi 77' & 70', Neymar 90') Bayern Munich 0: Led by former Barca manager Pep Guardiola, the Germans - without attacking big guns Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben - had frustrated Barca until being taken apart in the final 13 minutes. Lionel Messi and Neymar - part of the Catalans' triple strike threat alongside Luis Suarez - did the damage to all but end Bayern's final hopes. After the match, Guardiola said: "Barca is Leo [Lionel Messi] – but Barca are also a very good team and they are in top form in all departments. We had done well until the first goal but then we lost control." AP

May 12, 2015 - Champions League semi-final, second leg. Bayern Munich 3 (Benatia 7', Lewandowski 59', Muller 74) Barcelona 2 (Neymar 15' & 29'): Medhi Benatia's early header had put Bayern in front but any comeback hopes were quickly dashed as Brazilian attacker Neymar struck twice in 15 minutes before the half-hour mark. Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller earned the Germans victory on the night but Barca prevailed 5-3 on aggregate and would go on to beat Juventus in the final - the Catalan club's last victory in the competition. After the Bayern win, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said: "It's a great achievement to reach the final ... This is our mission. This is what it means to be part of Barca." AP

Friday evening in Portugal sees two giants of European football go head-to-head into battle.

Spanish side Barcelona will take on Bayern Munich at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon which will be decided over one match, rather than over the usual two legs due to this year's tournament being disrupted by the coronavirus.

The winners will take on either Manchester City or Lyon in the last four.

Between them, Barca and Bayern have each won the European Cup/Champions League five times, also finishing runners-up on another eight occasions (Bayern five, Barca three).

Only Real Madrid (13), AC Milan (seven) and Liverpool (six) have won the tournament more, although neither club have lifted the trophy since Barca's 2015 triumph over Juventus.

It is seven years since Bayern were last champions when they overcame German rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final.

To reach the quarter-finals this time round, the Bavarians dismantled Premier League side Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the last 16, while Barcelona overcame Serie A side Napoli 4-1 over two legs.
