Gunners lucky to escape with draw at Elland Road after being reduced to 10 men

LEEDS UNITED RATINGS: Illan Meslier – 7. He had little to do for the most part, but did outstandingly well to thwart Saka when it felt like the away side were about to steal the lead. Getty

Luke Ayling – 7. Another in a line of Leeds players who seemed to be queueing up to blaze shots wide in the first half. Kept on pushing until he was subbed for Rodrigo with 20 minutes to go. AP

Robin Koch – 6. Happily light on action in defence, having played at centre back in Germany’s 6-0 loss to Spain in the international break. His distribution was lax a number of times when his side needed better going forward. AFP

Liam Cooper – 6. Did well to thwart a break at the end of the first half when Leeds were outnumbered at the back. Naïve foul gave Arsenal a decent shooting chance from a free kick, and was relieved later too, when VAR spared him a handball. Getty

Stuart Dallas – 7. Three full games for Northern Ireland in the international break showed in his lack of precision at times, notably when he fired an appetising first-half opening wide. But he was still crucial to much of what the hosts did best. Getty

Kalvin Phillips – 7. Such a reassuring presence on his return to fitness in the Leeds engine room. Overcame a worrying looking knee injury in the second half. Getty

Ezgjan Alioski – 8. Set up Bamford for an early chance with an inexhaustible 80-yard dash then cross, and he was a bundle of energy down the Leeds left flank all game. On the receiving end in the incident that saw Pepe sent off. Getty

Raphinha – 7. Undeterred by one embarrassing shot when he slipped early in the piece, and went just wide with what would have been a fine goal shortly after. Became the third Leeds player to hit the frame of the goal at the end. AP

Mateusz Klich – 6. Frustratingly profligate after a sharp move, and fine first touch, in the first half, and repeated the flaw just as the clock clicked over to 90 minutes. Reuters

Jack Harrison – 7. Helped fashion an early opening for Bamford, and formed a productive double-act with Alioski down the left, before going off with 10 minutes to go. Getty

Patrick Bamford – 7. Saw a series of half chances blocked by Leno, then when he did a header past the German goalkeeper in the 87th minute, the post spared the away team anyway. Getty

SUBSTITUTES: Rodrigo – 8. Saw a blistering drive from distance miss the apex by inches, then hit the frame of the goal shortly after, as he added impetus to the home side’s late push for a winner. Reuters

Ian Poveda-Ocampo – NA. Purposeful and tricky when he came on for Harrison, but should have done better with a pass to Rodrigo as Leeds broke. PA

ARSENAL RATINGS: Bernd Leno – 8. Did what he needed to from two efforts by Bamford, and was lucky not to be tested more by wasteful Leeds finishing in the first half. Fine save to stop a Dallas drive bound for the top corner in the second. EPA

Hector Bellerin – 5. Given how rapid he is, it was a surprise to see him struggle to keep pace with Harrison and Alioski as Leeds had plenty of joy down his flank. AFP

Rob Holding – 6. Helped blank the in-form Bamford, although he had his goalkeeper and a post to thank for that. Looked to have enjoyed his partnership with Gabriel. Getty

Gabriel – 7. Formed a decent enough block with Holding in the middle of the away side’s defence. Which they needed to, given the waves of pressure they were under. Getty

Kieran Tierney – 6. Suffered a few painful blows, first when Phillips slipped into him, then later when Raphinha blazed a shot into him from close range. Stood up to it, though. Reuters

Granit Xhaka – 5. Chasing shadows because of the quick exchange of passes in the Leeds midfield, and blasted a free kick over in one of Arsenal’s best opportunities in the second half. PA

Joe Willock – 6. Perhaps unlucky to be hooked in the aftermath of the Pepe red card, seeing as he had been one of the brightest of Arsenal’s forwards. It was lean pickings, though. EPA

Dani Ceballos – 7. The most willing of the visitors’ midfielders, and he tried to take the fight to the Leeds midfield. Guilty of some wayward shooting when well placed twice early on. EPA

Willian – 4. Not the only Arsenal player to be off the pace in the first half, and he gave way to Reiss Nelson at the interval. Getty

Nicolas Pepe – 4. Clipped the crossbar, although that was with an errant cross, in the first half, but was then was guilty of idiocy as he was sent off for leading his forehead into Alioski off the ball. PA

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5. Blazed high and wide with his side’s best chance early on, and saw precious little in the way of openings thereafter. AFP

SUBSTITUTES: Reiss Nelson – 6. Brought on for the anonymous Willian at the break, and offered far more than the Brazilian. Not that that was saying too much. Getty

Bakayo Saka – 7. Raised the game considerably when he came on after the red card, pushing back both Ayling and Raphinha, but went off himself with injury in injury time. Ainsley Maitland-Niles – NA. Earned an appearance fee when he got on in injury time at the end, as Saka limped off. Reuters

Leeds United hit the woodwork three times in the closing minutes as they failed to find a winner against 10-man Arsenal at Elland Road, with the match ending in a goalless draw.

Substitute Rodrigo crashed a powerful shot against the crossbar, before Patrick Bamford and Raphinha both saw shots rebound back off the same post late on.

The home side would have been deserving winners against an Arsenal side which saw Nicolas Pepe sent off in the second half for violent conduct in an off-the-ball incident with Ezgjan Alioski.
