WEST HAM RATINGS: Alphonse Areola: 8 - Was kept busy on the night, making some key saves, including one very important one with his legs to deny Gundogan late on. Getty Images

Aaron Cresswell: 7 - The left-back was both defensively sound and a good attacking outlet. He kept Mahrez quiet on his flank and managed to make headway to put in a few dangerous crosses. AFP

Manuel Lanzini: 5 - Looked safe on the ball, but rarely offered his side a threat when going forward with possession. Getty Images

Tomas Soucek: 6 - The midfielder played well, covering a lot of ground and winning a fair few duels during the match. PA

Arthur Masuaku: 7 - Saw a lot of the ball and began to make things happen for the home side. The only thing he struggled to do was apply a finishing touch in the game. PA

Nikola Vlasic: 5 - The summer signing saw very little of the ball going forward, though he won some key battles during the game. PA

Kyle Walker: 6 - Had a quiet 45 minutes before he was substituted off at half time. He was safe in possession, but rarely offered a threat going forward. Getty Images

Fernandinho: 8 - The holding midfielder put on a vintage display, showing What he is still capable of. He was key for his side in stopping the West Ham counter-attacks and allowed his side to pile on the pressure. Getty Images

Ilkay Gundogan: 6 - The Germany international kept the side ticking in possession, receiving the ball in areas around the box to try and make things happen. PA

Kevin De Bruyne: 5 - The playmaker didn’t have his usual impact, getting a lot of time on the ball but rarely being able to create anything of great use to his team. Getty Images

Riyad Mahrez: 5 - Struggled to get himself into the game at times, often well ushered by Cresswell. Getty Images

Cole Palmer: 6 - The youngster looked to build upon the goal he scored from the bench in the last round and although he wasn’t able to score, he looked lively throughout. Getty Images

Raheem Sterling: 7 - Looked the main threat for his side, getting the ball on the left and causing issues. The winger didn’t quite get the clear cut opportunity to score, though. Getty Images

SUB: Joao Cancelo (For Walker 46’): 6 - The full-back came on at half-time and added a little more drive going forward for his side. PA

Holders Manchester City were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by West Ham United after a penalty shootout at London Stadium on Wednesday.

The game went to penalties after ending goalless and the Hammers triumphed 5-3 in the spot kicks to end Pep Guardiola's team's run of four straight League Cup triumphs.

Substitute Phil Foden missed the first penalty for City and Said Benrahma converted the final kick to give the Hammers victory in what is becoming an excellent season for the East London club.

With Manchester United knocked out in the previous round, it means the cup will be won by a non-Manchester club for the first time since 2015.

Liverpool moved into the last eight of the competition with a 2-0 victory at Preston North End thanks to second half goals from Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.

Leicester City edged out Brighton and Hove Albion on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Harvey Barnes had put Leicester in front before two goals on the stroke of halftime, with Adam Wester levelling for Brighton only to see Ademola Lookman restore the Foxes' advantage.

Enock Mwepu forced the game to penalties after levelling in the 71st minute but the Zambian then missed the crucial spot kick in the shoot-out as Brendan Rodgers' side took their place in the quarter-finals.

Tottenham Hotspur also progressed after a 1-0 win at Burnley with Lucas Moura grabbing the 68th minute winner with a header from a Emerson Royal cross in a disappointing game.

Premier League Brentford took care of business against Championship Stoke City with Sergi Canos and Ivan Toney on target for the London club in a 2-1 win.

The draw for the quarter-finals, which also include Chelsea, Arsenal and third-tier Sunderland, will be held on Saturday.
