  • Vijay Shankar (5/10): The 13th player to bat at No 4 for India in ODIs since the end of the 2015 World Cup, Shankar did a good job, scoring 29 runs. But he will rue not kicking on while looking fairly comfortable in difficult conditions. Aijaz Rahi / AP Photo

  • MS Dhoni (5/10): He struggled with the bat, scoring just 28, but he deserves some credit for holding one end up. There is a good chance India will have collapsed if not for Dhoni showing a little strategic patience. Aijaz Rahi / AP Photo

  • Kedar Jadhav (8/10): Such was his fluency with the bat, it seemed like he was playing on another pitch. He was the only other Indian to score a fifty as he ensured his team put a respectable total on the board. Usefully, he has got his eye in and also runs under his belt after spending much of the time in previous matches watching from the dressing room as his teammates got much-needed batting practice. • Mohammed Shami (10/10): He took a hat-trick in the last over of the match when Afghanistan were still very much in the game. Coming in as a replacement for the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he took four wickets in all to show why he is still a big part of this team. Paul Childs / Reuters

  • Jasprit Bumrah (10/10): He took two wickets, and that too the crucial ones of Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi when the two batsmen were set and batting beautifully. Had it not been for his interventions, Afghanistan may well have won. And for this, he deserved the man-of-the-match award. Aijaz Rahi / AP Photo

Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah relentless: India player ratings against Afghanistan

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami top India's report card as we rate individual performances during their Cricket World Cup win against Afghanistan on Saturday.

The title contenders, who previously beat South Africa, Australia and Pakistan in the tournament, struggled with the bat on a slowish pitch and against a doughty Afghan bowling unit at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Captain Virat Kohli and his men ended up posting a seemingly below-par total of 224-8.

In response, Afghanistan seemed at one point to be cruising along. But fast bowlers Bumrah and Shami, who is back in the side as a replacement for the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar, took six wickets between them.

The latter even took a hat-trick off the third, fourth and fifth deliveries of the last over. But it was Bumrah who was deservedly given the man-of-the-match award for making crucial dismissals.
