Al Wasl set to complete deal for Portuguese winger Helder Barbosa from AEK Athens
DUBAI // Al Wasl expect to complete the signing of Helder Barbosa in the next few days after the club agreed a transfer fee with AEK Athens.
The Portuguese winger, 29, should arrive in Dubai this weekend to finalise a $500,000 (Dh1.84 million) move from the Greek side, completing Wasl’s foreign contingent for the 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League season.
Wasl had originally requested to take Barbosa on loan, however AEK were open only to a permanent deal. The two clubs have since settled on a price, with Wasl hoping to make a formal announcement in the coming days. Hugo Viana, the midfielder who left the Zabeel Stadium earlier this summer, was instrumental in the transfer.

Barbosa spent two seasons with AEK, making 68 appearances and scoring 15 goals. During that time, he helped the club become champions of the 2014/15 Football League, the country’s second tier, and thus gain promotion to the Greek Superleague.
Barbosa began his career in Portugal with Porto, but spent most of his time at the Estadio do Dragao on loan to other clubs in his homeland. He eventually moved to Braga in 2010, a period that included a one-year loan spell at Spain’s Almeria. With Braga, Barbosa scored 18 times in 108 appearances and won the Portuguese Cup.
The attacking midfielder, capable of playing on both flanks and as a No 10, fills the one remaining foreign slot in Wasl’s squad for the new season, the club’s first with Argentine manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena in charge. Ronaldo Mendes, the summer’s other major signing, will feature alongside Barbosa, Caio and Fabio De Lima.
