A dubious 76th minute penalty gave Ghana a 1-0 win over Group C rivals Ethiopia in the African Nations Championship on Tuesday, as Ghana and Libya advanced to the knock-out stages.

Ethiopian midfielder Salahdin Hussen was judged to have brought down Seidu Bansey on the edge of the box, although a replay showed minimal contact before the striker tumbled to the ground.

But Kwabena Adusei made no mistake from the penalty box, sending the keeper the wrong way and sending Ghana into the quarter finals.

Ethiopia go home after failing to win a single game.

Meanwhile Hardy Binguila scored two for Congo-Brazzaville to earn a 2-2 draw against Libya, but it was not enough to prevent the North African side from progressing.

An injury time equaliser from Abdelrahman Fetori, coupled with Abdelsalam Omar’s earlier goal, saw Libya progress as group runners up. Congo, with four points, finished third in the group. Ethiopia went without a victory in three matches.

The other quarter-finalists include Morocco and Zimbabwe from Group B and Mali and Nigeria from Group A.

The last two knock-out spots will be up for grabs between Congo DR, Gabon and Burundi in Group D, who play on Wednesday night. Mauritania, in Group D, have already been mathematically eliminated.
