Perez to return with Force India
Sergio Perez will race again for Force India in 2015 after a new deal with the team was announced on Saturday at the Etihard Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Mexican, who is 12th in this season's drivers' standings with 47 points, will again partner Nico Hulkenberg, having joined from McLaren-Mercedes at the start of the season. Perez said: "I'm enjoying my racing and we've already celebrated some special results together." Perez's best result of the year came in Bahrain in April when he finished third to earn the team their lone podium finish this season.
Button ready to enjoy the moment
Jenson Button has pledged to "have some fun" today in what could be his last race in F1. The 2009 world champion, who made his debut in 2000, has yet to find out if he will be retained by McLaren-Mercedes for next season, with Fernando Alonso having been linked to a return to the team, having been there in 2007. Starting sixth, the Briton, who has finished on the podium three times in the past in Abu Dhabi, said: "I don't know where we're going to be, but I intend to have some fun. One thing's for sure, I'll go out there and get the maximum out of the car."
Stevens Close to Even at Caterham
Given he only found out on Thursday afternoon he would be driving in Abu Dhabi for Caterham, you could forgive Will Stevens for having limited expectations on his pace. But the Briton, 23, who starts his first F1 race today, was happy his speed was good enough to have matched teammate Kamui Kobayashi. Stevens, who raced in Formula Renault 3.5 this season, was slowest in qualifying, but only half a second off Kobayashi, and he said: “I’m pleased, because I know that if I hadn’t made that mistake I would’ve been matching my teammate.”
Vandoorne takes GP2 opening race
Stoffel Vandoorne was triumphant in the opening GP2 race of the weekend yesterday. The Belgian, who had started on pole position, won by 12 seconds from Briton Jolyon Palmer, who has already won this season’s drivers’ title before coming to Abu Dhabi. Mitch Evans took third place, seven seconds behind Palmer, and fourth was Felipe Nasr, who will move to F1 next season with Sauber. The series runs a reverse grid format for the top eight for today’s sprint race, over 22 laps, with Arthur Pic, on pole, having finished in eighth yesterday, ahead of Stefano Coletti.
Stoneman wins GP3 by 0.8 seconds
Dean Stoneman won the first GP3 race of the weekend yesterday as he led from start to finish. The Briton passed pole-sitter Marvin Kirchhofer at the start and won by 0.8 seconds. The victory was a consolation for Stoneman, whose slim title hopes had been ended on Friday when he had failed to take pole for the race, missing out on the bonus points needed to have a chance of overhauling compatriot Alex Lynn. The top three was completed by Dino Zamparelli in third place, with Lynn almost 10 seconds adrift of Stoneman in fifth.
