Emiratis working part-time in public and private sectors to receive pension coverage

Emiratis working part-time in the public and private sectors will be covered by the UAE pension system, the General Pension and Social Security Authority said on Friday.

Under the regulations, part-time employees can be registered in the pension system if they work between eight and 32 hours a week, or between one and four days a week.

This is equivalent to between 20 and 80 per cent of full-time working hours.

Emirati citizens employed on part-time contracts will be eligible for the coverage under UAE pension law.

“The initiative aligns with evolving labour market dynamics, supports flexible on-site, remote and hybrid work models, and promotes financial security and stability for all citizens,” the GPSSA said.

An employee’s service period and pension benefits will be calculated proportionately, based on the number of hours worked and the approved contribution-calculation salary for the relevant period.

Employers' responsibility

Employers are responsible for registering eligible Emirati part-time workers with GPSSA.

They must also update information on the authority’s Maashi platform when an insured employee moves from a full-time position to a part-time contract.

Employees can join the part-time pension system by submitting a request to their human resources department, which allows their employer to register them.

The GPSSA said extending social security protection across different types of employment would give Emiratis greater flexibility to balance their careers with other commitments, including education and caring for family members.

“The part-time pension framework ensures continuity of service when individuals move between full-time and part-time roles, supporting their long-term financial and social well-being,” the authority said.

Emiratis covered by the pension system can qualify for benefits including a retirement pension or end-of-service gratuity, a disability pension in cases of medical unfitness and survivors' pensions for eligible beneficiaries following the death of an insured person.
