President Sheikh Mohamed sent a message of congratulations to India's President Droupadi Murmu as the country marks its Independence Day.

Similar congratulatory messages were also sent by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, to the Indian President and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, state news agency Wam reported.

Sheikh Mohammed also took to social media platform X to send a message of congratulations.

“Today, India proudly marks its 78th Independence Day, a testament to the nation's incredible developmental journey. As we celebrate this significant milestone, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to my friend Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and to the Indian people,” wrote Sheikh Mohammed.

“The UAE remains dedicated to reinforcing our friendship, advancing our bilateral co-operation, and fostering strong bonds across all facets of our enduring partnership.

“Wishing our Indian friends a joyous Independence Day.”

India observes the occasion, which commemorates the country being freed from British rule in 1947, on August 15 each year.

Consul General of India Satish Kumar Sivan hoisted his nation's flag at an event to mark Independence Day on Thursday at the consulate in Dubai.

The UAE and India have forged close links over the years across sectors including economy, education and culture.

Mr Modi addressed 40,000 Indian citizens at the Ahlan Modi event at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi during his visit to the UAE in February.

During his speech, Mr Modi said India was proud of the expats who have created history in Abu Dhabi.

“The connection between our nations is historic and it is our wish that this continues in the future,” he said.

“Keep making the bonds between the UAE and India strong. And I thank you for coming here.”

He also spoke at the World Government Summit in Dubai during his visit, before inaugurating the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi later that same day.

What is graphene?

Graphene is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon.

It is 200 times more resistant than steel and five times lighter than aluminum.

It conducts electricity better than any other material at room temperature.

It is thought that graphene could boost the useful life of batteries by 10 per cent.

Graphene can also detect cancer cells in the early stages of the disease.

The material was first discovered when Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were 'playing' with graphite at the University of Manchester in 2004.
