2 Taking a Strand

If you’re looking for a statement chair that you can sink in to without breaking the bank, we’d recommend Ikea’s Strandmon. The high-backed wing chair comes in dark blue and orange, too, but we like the sombre “Svanby Grey” version best.

• Strandmon wing chair, Dh995, Ikea stores nationwide

3 Lounge act

Low arms and a sumptuous, 108-centimetre-deep seat make Andrew Martin’s Montague chair the optimum vehicle for serious lounging sessions. The chair can be upholstered in any Andrew Martin fabric – and there are countless to choose from – but we like the “Iowa Neutral” fabric, a floral tapestry on a heavyweight carpet cloth, as pictured here.

• Montague chair, price on request, Andrew Martin, DIFC

4 An evil throne

The aptly named Villian Chair will make you feel like you are moonlighting in a James Bond film from the 1970s. Made from leather, steel, chrome and aluminium, and standing 120 centimetres high on a swivel base, it’s the perfect place to put your feet up. We’re just not sure how you’ll stop people stealing your seat.

• Villain Chair, Dh33,030, www.wamli.com

5 Playing the long game

The Holiday sofa by the Italian brand Molteni & C manages to look delicate and sumptuous at the same time. A light frame and wraparound back are coupled with dainty steel feet, which come in either a shiny chrome or titanium finish. The sofa is fully modular and comes in a range of fabric and leather options, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

The National takes a look at the story of one of the most successful technologies of the last 100 years and how it has impacted life in the UAE.

Why your domicile status is important

Your UK residence status is assessed using the statutory residence test. While your residence status – ie where you live - is assessed every year, your domicile status is assessed over your lifetime.

Your domicile of origin generally comes from your parents and if your parents were not married, then it is decided by your father. Your domicile is generally the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born.

UK residents who have their permanent home ("domicile") outside the UK may not have to pay UK tax on foreign income. For example, they do not pay tax on foreign income or gains if they are less than £2,000 in the tax year and do not transfer that gain to a UK bank account.

A UK-domiciled person, however, is liable for UK tax on their worldwide income and gains when they are resident in the UK.
