Set on the fourth floor of the Taj hotel in Downtown Dubai is Bombay Brasserie, a casual-dining restaurant serving Indian cuisine in beautiful surrounds – the walls are covered with traditional, vibrant artworks, the chairs are upholstered in velvet, the cosy booths are accented with colourful, brightly printed cushions, and the windows offer stunning views over Dubai and the Burj Khalifa. An open kitchen, complete with tandoor grill, in the middle of the space lets guests in on the action as they wait for their food. Indian instrumental music playing in the background set the mood for a relaxed evening.

The menu is mainly north Indian, and we opted for lamb chops, tender and grilled to perfection, and served with mint chutney and a rhubarb salad. For the main course we went with a tried-and-tested dish, chicken tikka masala, which was the best I’ve ever had: the sauce was the perfect consistency and had the right amount of heat. Surprisingly, it was made with chunks of bone-in chicken, a far cry from the less flavourful, chicken-breast versions that most restaurants serve.
