As Beyonce becomes the latest celebrity to step out carrying a bag by UAE designer L'Afshar, it's the perfect time to look back at the brand's history.
British-born Iranian designer Lilian Afshar launched L’Afshar upon graduating from Esmod fashion school in 2013. Within three months, her bug-adorned bag designs were being hailed as the must-have accessory at Fashion Weeks by international style publications. The designer then began posting images of her latest creations to Instagram, where they quickly garnered public attention.
After stints living in London, Vancouver and Marbella, Afshar settled in Dubai, where her bags are produced. She describes her contemporary designs as equal parts architecture and art, thanks to their boxy styles and interesting industrial materials.
L’Afshar has become particularly well known for its signature marble-style clutch bags, which come in a range of colours and can be personalised – something the designer deems important. The brand’s unique selling point is its textures, which range from clear crystal-cut acrylic to croc-embossed leather.
Last week, Beyonce was spotted carrying the purple boxy Ida bag, and she is not the only celebrity fan of the brand. Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and little sister Kylie have all been seen with L’Afshar accessories in the past, while Alicia Keys carried the Pagoda bag to a pre-Grammys event last year. Over in Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor has been spotted carrying the label’s Lineas clutch.
The bags are stocked at high-end stores and e-tailors around the world, including Net-a-Porter, Bloomingdale’s and Moda Operandi.
Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.

Chef Nobu's advice for eating sushi
“One mistake people always make is adding extra wasabi. There is no need for this, because it should already be there between the rice and the fish.
“When eating nigiri, you must dip the fish – not the rice – in soy sauce, otherwise the rice will collapse. Also, don’t use too much soy sauce or it will make you thirsty. For sushi rolls, dip a little of the rice-covered roll lightly in soy sauce and eat in one bite.
“Chopsticks are acceptable, but really, I recommend using your fingers for sushi. Do use chopsticks for sashimi, though.
“The ginger should be eaten separately as a palette cleanser and used to clear the mouth when switching between different pieces of fish.”
