Is this Jacquemus micro handbag the most talked-about design to emerge from Paris Fashion Week?

The pinkie-friendly purse has been described as the new "It bag" by designers, but the internet is left scratching its (figurative) head

It's a subjective topic, fashion, with people bringing their own preferences, styles and persuasions to the table.

However, one new creation is proving to be more divisive than most: enter Jacquemus's Mini Le Chiquito bag.

The almost-microscopic accessory might have been a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment on the Paris Fashion Week runway, but it's certainly created a big impact ever since.

The itsy-bitsy purse measures just two inches in length, according to The Guardian, meaning it's too small to hold credit cards, phones and house keys. Essentially, you'd have to go about your day with little more than a few nuggets of gum, some rolled-up banknotes and perhaps a dirham or two.

"Bag for a ring? Or?" the French fashion label, which is helmed by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, questioned on Instagram.

The minute tote – that can tote almost nothing – is the little sister to Jacquemus's Le Chiquito bag, which debuted for autumn/winter 2018, and has been worn by Kim Kardashian West and Rihanna.

The diminutive design itself only measures four inches by two-and-a-half inches, and, like its smaller sibling, comes complete with gold lettering spelling out the brand's name. The micro version, however, can only fit a J on the top-handle bag, making the mini look positively spacious in comparison.

Jacquemus also unveiled its mini Le Vanity shoulder bag last Fashion Week, for spring/summer 2019, which is just 3.1 inches tall.

"What would you fit inside?" the brand asked on Instagram. It doesn't even look big enough to hold our emotional baggage, let alone the daily essentials.

While Jacquemus has not yet revealed what the micro Le Chiquito will cost, the mini version retails for $522 (Dh1,971) while the Le Vanity will set you back $240 (Dh881).

The minute creation was lauded by fashion critics, with Elle magazine describing the Barbie-worthy design as the "new It bag" – although social media commenters swiftly turned the Chiquito into sartorial meme.

It’s not the first time Salon-de-Provence-born Jacquemus has created a stir by playing with proportions; the designer’s exaggerated straw hat that blocked out the sun (as well as created quite the neck ache, we imagine) was an Instagram sensation last summer.

Jacquemus also played with oversized silhouettes for autumn/winter 2019, crafting enormous carryalls and four-pouched bumbags that more resembled lifebelts.

We wait with bated breath to see what Jacquemus has in store for next season – but we assume the front row will need to take binoculars along to the show.
