Alicia Keys and her family are currently holidaying in Egypt – and offering us all a lesson in how to immerse yourself in a foreign culture. Keys is in the North African country with husband Kasseem Dean, better known as Swizz Beatz, her two sons Egypt Daod and Gensis Ali Dean, and her mother-in-law.

She was officially welcomed to the country by the country's tourism board, Experience Egypt, which posted the following message on Instagram: "@aliciakeys has landed in #Egypt! The Grammy award-winning musician and her husband @therealswizzzhave been spotted in Cairo taking the Pyramid experience to a whole new level!"

As well as posing up a storm in front of the pyramids, Keys has taken the time to learn lots of local history: “Some call it the sphinx but we learned the original name is Heruemahket,” she posted on Instagram, alongside a picture of her and Beatz in profile, with the sphinx in the background.

Keys visited Karnak and expressed her wonder at the majesty of the ruins found there (“as you can see I’m literally STUNNED at the massiveness of everything,” she wrote), took a boat trip along the Nile, tried her hand at a spot of belly dancing and took part in an Arabic lesson with the rest of her group.

But her most powerful message came alongside a picture of her two sons playing in the sand in front of the pyramids, where she referenced their North African roots - Beatz is of Eritrean origin.

“Sands of time... I just want them to know how powerful they are… How incredible our ancestors were… The first astrophysicists, scientists, physicians, mathematicians, architects, creators of so much of the world as we know it. It’s such a blessing to know what cloth you’re cut from!”
