Sony PlayStation 4 users will be able to use their console without being plugged into a television after the company launched its new Xperia Z3 range.
The Remote Play feature was unveiled at IFA Berlin this evening as Sony announced its latest flagship phone, the Xperia Z3 Dual, along with a compact version. Other announcements included the Xperia Z3 tablet, the mid-range Xperia E3 Dual smartphone and a new smartwatch and smartband.
Gamers will be excited about the new technology, which will allow them to continue playing PS4 games while the television is being used for something else. The Xperia Z3 device is connected to the PS4 via Wi-Fi and is used as the screen with the DualShock 4 controller also connected.
The Xperia Z3 Dual flagship phone comes just six months after the launch of the Z2 as Sony looks to release its best available technology to mount a serious challenge to the likes of Samsung and Apple in the high-end segment of the smartphone market.
It has a Qualcomm 8.1 Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor with 2.5GHz speed for browsing and has a battery life of two days.
The device features a 20.7 megapixel camera, weighs 152g and has a 7.3mm thick aluminium frame. The compact version is 8.6mm thick, weighs 129g and has been designed for one-handed use according to Sony.
The Xperia Z3 tablet meanwhile is “the world’s slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet”, Sony said in a statement.
It has stainless steel corners and the highest waterproof rating (IP65/68) meaning that it can be used in the swimming pool or — in the unlikely event in the UAE — when it is raining.
The Sony Smartwatch 3 runs on Google's Android Wear and has a built-in accelerometer, compass, gyro and GPS sensor technology. It comes in black and lime and extra straps will be available in pink and white.
Release dates and prices for the UAE are yet to be confirmed.
“Sony is relentless in its pursuit of innovation and we believe that consumers shouldn’t settle for good experiences, but demand great ones,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, the president and chief executive of Sony Mobile Communications.
“It’s this spirit of customer focused innovation that drives us to deliver great products and experiences, with the widest ever choice and flexibility, without compromise.”
